Stephen Roxburgh’s Views on the Art of the Young Adult Novel

Stephen Roxburgh has been working in YA novels for three decades: as an academic, VP for Young Readers at Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, and president of Front Street Books.  In this article (originally a keynote address to the ALAN YA Workshop), Roxburgh goes beyond mere description of YA literature and addresses the essential ingredients of the genre.  He asks, “Are there artistic criteria that apply to the novel that shed light on the young adult novel?”  The answer, fortunately, is yes.  Read “The Art of the Young Adult Novel” to learn this experienced editor’s insights.
